The 1979 Acropolis Rally held on dirt and asphalt was a real disaster for the vast majority of participants. Of the 173 registered, only 20 managed to finish the 58 sections programmed by the Automovil Club of Greece. In the end, Bjorn Waldegaard imposed his Ford Escort MkII Rothmans on the two Datsun 160Js, thus beginning a three-year period of Escort dominance in the Greek rally. In 80 and 81 Vatanen won with the Escort.
