All variants of the Panzer IV were revolutionary for their time, but the pace of tank evolution in World War II was so great that nearly continuous changes had to be made to the Wehrmacht’s ve­hicles. One of the greatest leaps was the distinction between the F1 and F2 variants of the Pz. IV. Like previous variants, the F1 mounted a 75mm short barrel gun that fired low-velocity high-explosive shells—totally useless against the T-34. The F2 made tank to tank combat a priority with a long-barreled, high velocity 75mm anti-tank gun.
